The 'Riverside Clubhouse', designed by Alexey Chikovsky and Emission-Zero Architects, is a unique architectural marvel located near the medieval town center of Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK, renowned as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. This multifunctional facility serves as a bar, restaurant, and conference venue, boasting an angular form inspired by the upturned hull of a Viking boat and the profiles of Gothic roof pitches.
Constructed using a traditional Norwegian log-shell technique with handmade raw timber, the clubhouse exudes a rustic charm that harmonizes with its countryside surroundings. The construction process involved the manufacturing of wooden components in Russia, which were then transported and meticulously assembled on-site in the UK by the collaborative efforts of the Russian-English company, Fram.
To safeguard the clubhouse from potential floods in the flood-prone area, it is elevated on a steel structure reminiscent of a pier. This elevated design not only provides flood protection but also facilitates passive cooling and natural ventilation, enhancing the overall sustainability of the development. The material palette of organic rough timber, zinc metal, and glass, complemented by carpentry joints insulated with hemp jute, further underscores the environmentally conscious approach of the project.
By seamlessly blending into its countryside environment and local architectural context, the 'Riverside Clubhouse' stands as a testament to innovative design, sustainable construction practices, and a deep appreciation for nature and heritage.
