As an architectural photographer with over 20 years of experience, I understand that one of the most common questions potential clients have is: how much does architectural photography cost? The answer isn’t always straightforward, as pricing can vary significantly based on factors such as the size of the project, the location, the number of images required, and the level of post-production needed. In this post, I’ll break down the key considerations that affect the cost of professional architectural photography and explain my pricing approach, which offers a greater return on their investment in content than many other photographers traditional fee structure. I offer sensible value and flexibility to clients especially in the places I regularly work like Liverpool or near by Manchester with Birmingham also a regular location for me.

Factors That Influence Architectural Photography Pricing

1. Time on Location

The amount of time required to capture a project is a major cost factor. A small residential shoot may take only a couple of hours, while a large commercial project with multiple buildings and interiors can take a full day or several days. Some projects also require both daytime and evening shots to showcase how a building interacts with natural and artificial light. All these time elements have a cost attached.

2. Number of Images Delivered

Many architectural photographers charge a base rate that includes a limited number of images, typically between 15-50. Any additional images are charged separately, usually at £30-£100 per image depending on use and client.

However, my pricing structure is different, I listen to clients and I offer an all-inclusive approach, meaning clients receive a full set of professionally edited images at no extra cost based on the time spent on location starting at £350 for up to half day. This typically includes well over 50 images.

3. Post-Production Work

Post-production is a crucial part of architectural photography. It includes color correction, distortion removal, and retouching to remove distractions such as litter, marks on walls, or unwanted reflections. Some projects require extensive editing, such as removing street furniture, graffiti, or obtrusive background elements. The level of post-processing needed will only influence the overall cost if any additional work beyond what I do is requested. My approach is to make sure every image is perfect but occasionally there is some additional special photoshop work that may be requested and I’ll discuss additional costs for this per project or image.

4. Licensing and Usage Rights

When hiring an architectural photographer, it’s important to understand image licensing. Some photographers charge a fee per image for different usage rights, such as marketing, social media, or print materials. My approach is more flexible—I provide an all-inclusive licensing model that allows my clients full usage rights for their business. Additionally, if third parties such as architects, designers, or contractors want to be part of the commission, I offer shared licensing at a 30% additional fee, making it a cost-effective solution.

This applies to initial commision so if third parties require use of images post shoot I charge on a per image rate, this is only fair to the parties that wanted to invest in the production of the images and benefit from the use of all images.

I retain copyright of all images but you get all use rights you just can’t sell them or give them to other companies to use for their marketing.

5. Travel and Location Considerations

The cost of architectural photography can also depend on the location of the project. While I am based in Shropshire, I frequently work in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, and London. I generally don’t charge travel to these locations but further afield Travel costs, accommodation (if necessary) & additional expenses such as meals and parking will be factored into the overall fee, but I always aim to keep expenses reasonable for my clients.

My Pricing Model: Transparent and Value-Driven

Unlike some photographers who charge a flat fee that includes only a small number of images, my pricing is designed to provide maximum value. I charge based on time spent on location, and all professionally edited images are included in the fee, ensuring my clients receive the most comprehensive coverage possible. And a great return in terms of variety of content and it’s value to their marketing and promotion.

For businesses looking to showcase their projects, whether for marketing, sales, or client presentations, investing in high-quality architectural photography is a cost-effective decision. The images I provide help architects, developers, and designers highlight the quality of their work, attract new clients, and build their brand presence. If you're looking for an experienced architectural photographer in Liverpool or have projects in near by Manchester I am well positioned to travel to these cities and Birmingham areas without any additional travel fees so feel free to get in touch to discuss your project.
